Web Fonts Study

Ascender Corporation a leader in font products announced the release of a study, of fonts that can be downloaded from the web, including freeware and shareware. They have analyzied more than 4572 TT (TrueType) fonts for Mac, Win, and Linux users. The goal of analyzing was to determine ther viability for usage in ideas that W3C is considering.
W3C is currently considering linking of downloadable fonts to web pages, to extend CSS specification. It’s a great idea, but there is soo many other issues related to this idea: font’s are primary technical, and intellectual property.
The study showed that 95% of tested font’s fail in one or more of 6 tests performed. In the tests they checked:
– proper character sets
– trademark and copyright
– truetype hinting tables
– font embedding setting

Also, teams from Ascender Corporation made some of the popular fonts used today, including MacOS and Windows fonts. This is first study done this way, and it was done to help the common people and web users better understand the problems with using fonts on the internet.
