Did you ever had a job where you had to vectorize a whole bunch of logos? Or recreate drawings from bitmaps? As there is many commercial applications for vectorizing bitmaps, there is few (or none) of them for free. Even better, there is none that’s available online!
But, the researchers James Diebel and Jacob Nordapart at the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Laboratory made some pretty good job at their project called VectorMagic.
VectorMagic is free online service/tool for vectorizing bitmap images like logos, pictures, drawings and such.
As it’s a result of a research, it’s not perfect (still in Beta version), but it’s free, online, and did we mentioned free? 🙂
Now, let’s take a brief look on how that amazing VectorMagic works…
First you visit their page at vectormagic.stanford.edu

Then from there, you can directly upload an image of your choice. We will upload our well known FinalDesign logo, as low-resolution PNG file.

Now, after choosing some options and few clicks later, the algorithm behind complex and nicely designed flash application will start working. After few seconds we got this:

We must say, that for such a small image, we did not expect pretty good result as this:

And finally your result can be downloaded as EPS, SWG and PNG file.
Compared to commercial tools for vectorization it really kick’s ass to commercial ones. Take a look at this comparisons chart.
